Aicar is 5-aminomidazol-4-carboxamide-1-beta-D-ribofuranoside in its structure.

Pharmacological properties of Aicar are caused by the activation of AMPK (5’AMP activated protein kinase, a cellular enzyme that controls energy balance inside a cell).
